If you have driven past the Lacombe Performing Arts Centre recently, you may have noticed that their hedge has been sculpted into a peculiar shape or recognized that it has become a guitar!

“This hedge has been large and cumbersome for so many years that we're really excited to not only shape it and bring it back to a decent size, but to incorporate the arts and incorporate sculpture into it,” said Executive Director of the Lacombe Performing Arts Centre, Rosanna Kerekes.

She noted that the hedge’s trimming was a little overdue.

“The city required them to cut it because it's so tall and it is right beside a stop sign,” added Kerekes.

Originally, the guitar was going to be an interactive piece with guitar strings but due to safety concerns and insurance reasons they decided against it. The money for the project was provided by Echo Lacombe Association.

“We actually received a grant from the Echo Storefront Initiative this year and this is going to be kind of a two year process but we are turning our hedge into a living sculpture,” said Kerekes.

However, what you see now is not quite the final product after a few years of growth the piece is expected to be finished.

“It's going to take two years to take full effect and make it grow where we need it to grow and trim it where we need to trim it,” said Kerekes.

The Lacombe Performing Arts Centre continues to offer Music in the Park on Wednesday’s at the park located outside of the Lacombe Memorial Centre. This week’s performers will be Renegade Station.
