On Sept. 24 at 5:43 a.m. Ponoka RCMP were dispatched to a single motor vehicle collision involving an adult male who was riding a motorcycle and struck a deer. 

The motorcyclist had been travelling southbound on Highway 815 just south of Highway 604/Township Road 420 when he struck the deer. He lost control of the motorcycle and slid on the highway. The driver came to a stop in the middle of the highway and the motorcycle slid into the ditch.

Good Samaritans stopped and came to the aid of the motorcyclist. Shortly thereafter, a northbound vehicle came upon the scene. The northbound vehicle pulled out to pass another northbound vehicle that had pulled over because of the collision.One of the good Samaritan’s that was assisting the motorcyclist jumped out of the way to avoid being struck. The northbound vehicle did not stop and continued northbound on Highway 815. The motorcyclist did not survive and was pronounced deceased.

The Ponoka RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance in locating the suspect vehicle and identifying the driver.The suspect vehicle is described as an early 2000 Volkswagen, possibly a Jetta, red in colour.It also had a rear passenger side (right) burnt tail light.

Ponoka RCMP are asking for anyone with information, or dash camera footage in the area of Highway 815 north or south between Ponoka, Alta. and the Joffre plant, as well as on Highway 53, east and west of the Highway 53 turnoff from Highway 815, to please contact Ponoka RCMP at 403-783-4472 or your local police.
