One of Canada’s most recognized chefs was in Red Deer this afternoon for the launch of a new grocery store.

Best known for her appearances on the hit Food Network show Top Chef Canada, both as a competitor and a judge, Lynn Crawford was on hand for the Grand Opening of the 40,000- square foot Central Alberta Co-op food store.

Crawford, who lives in Toronto, said she always enjoys heading west.

“I’ve been in Alberta many times and I’m a big fan. People in Alberta are hardworking, giving us great products to work with,” said Crawford.

Food Centre Manager Darren Andres, said he was excited to open, knowing how unique the store is to the community.

“Right from the get go it’s been crazy busy. This Co-op is what you will see in bigger centers like Saskatoon, even though this is the first store you’ll see this particular design,” said Andres.

Andres said he wasn’t expecting this amount of people, but was happy with the turnout.

“It’s been a pleasant surprise. There’s a lot of new shoppers and a lot of the shoppers who have “built” Co-op throughout Red Deer. It’s been a good blend of people,” said Andres.

One of those shoppers was Red Deer resident Lynn Reich. She said she was excited there was a lot local food, including meat, vegetables and dairy.

“I like that, and I think it’s a great idea,” said Reich.

“I enjoy buying local stuff, especially not having to go to farmer markets.”

Andres said something they are proud of is there 28-day aged beef. The beefs sits in a case for 28 days until it’s ready then cut into rib steaks or regular steaks.

It’s the most the tender steak you can, said Andres.
