Kids Can Catch Day is happening this Saturday (August 28) at Lacombe’s Len Thompson Ponds after being cancelled last year due to the pandemic.

“We’ve been doing it for the last 16 year. We try and get as many kids as we can out and keep them in the fishing game. We like to help out new kids that have never fished before. We do have some fishing rods that we lend out and we encourage anybody to bring their own,” said Bernie Street, Chair of Lacombe Fish and Game.

He says Lacombe Fish and Game tries to encourage kids to try out fishing in order to get them outside and enjoying the great outdoors.

In addition to casting a line, kids and families will also have the opportunity to grab a free lunch, help release fish into the pond, and maybe even earn a prize.

“We will have hot dogs, hamburgers and some refreshments for all those kids that are interested in doing it. We also have a fish release at about 11:00 AM where they can help the Smoky Mountain Trout Farm release some fish into the water, and that's always well received by all the kids,” added Street.

Although some fishing rods will be available for new anglers, if you have your own you are encouraged to bring it in case there are not enough rods.

Street’s advice for new anglers is simple. Just try it.

“All you can do is try it.  At any age you can learn to fish. It's just a matter of being able to use a fishing rod effectively and we will help with that,” said Street.

Street says Kids Can Catch Day is always a good time and hopes to see several families take part. The event will run from 10:00AM to 2:00PM on Saturday.
