Alberta Transportation says work on the new Gaetz Avenue interchange is right on schedule.

The majority of the work is expected to be complete by this fall.

Public Affairs Officer Anna Neale says there's currently a lot of work happening simultaneously, she explains what you're seeing on the QE2 at the south end of Red Deer.

“Girder installation for the Gaetz Ave bridge, construction of the new southbound highway 2 bridge over Taylor Drive, there will be some work to complete the opening of the northbound and southbound collector bridges over Taylor Drive and then of course eventually the old bridge will be demolished and opening of the new permanent alignment for Gaetz Ave northbound”.

A night closure of Taylor Drive will be in effect tomorrow night (May 24th) from 7 pm until 7 am Friday (May 25th) with detours for both northbound and southbound traffic.

As of tomorrow (May 24th), traffic on southbound Highway 2, between Taylor Drive and south of Gaetz Avenue, will be re-routed back to the southbound lanes from the current temporary set-up on the northbound lanes of Highway 2.

Once complete the new interchange will accommodate increased traffic volumes on Highway 2 by providing 3 lanes in each direction, and will improve safety and ease of travel by separating high and low speed traffic getting to and from the highway.

Neale says ongoing detours will be in place, flag persons are on site and speed reductions at times to 80 km/h.  She encourages you to check 511 Alberta for the latest updates and details of work.
