For the third time this week, Cst. Jeff Hewitt, Lacombe's School Resource Officer, spent his morning at the Bright Futures Play Academy at James S. McCormick School teaching kids about what it means to be a police officer.

Hewitt began his morning by showing up to the classroom, explaining a bit about what he does every day, and showed off his various crime fighting tools, including hand cuffs, Taser (still in the holster), and his pepper spray, or as the kids liked to call it, the "hot pepper".

From there, Cst. Hewitt made his was down to Popow Park, and on the way there, demonstrated the proper way to use a crosswalk.

Tracy Somers-Brown is a teacher at the Bright Futures Play Academy, and she said this is a great opportunity for the kids to have their first close-up experience with a police officer be a positive one.

"They are thrilled. We have a couple of kiddos who are sometimes a little hesitate when they see a police officer, because of past experiences with the officer. However, once they had an opportunity to spend some time with Cst. Jeff, they have such a positive outlook and attitude towards police officers. It's a really positive experience for them."

4-year-old Troy says his favourite part of the morning was getting to check out the police cruiser.

"He showed us his police cars, and he take the pictures when we were in the front of the drivers car. We went into the back, where the bad guys go. He didn't let me drive the car, but I went in it, so he could take a picture of me."

In the end, both Somers-Brown and the students saw this as an incredibly positive experience, one that will stay with the kids for a while.
