The Red Deer EcoLiving Fair and Workshops took place over the weekend and offered information on sustainable living solutions.

Green building technologies, preservation and pickling along with rainwater harvesting highlighted the event.

Environmental Program Specialist at City of Red Deer Bailey Doepker said saving rainwater has many benefits.

“Rainwater is a valuable resource and we pay for our water. It’s a perfect opportunity to “A” say some money and “B” utilize our natural resource which is better for plants and lawns than treated water.”

City of Red Deer is offering rebates of 50 per cent on the purchase of a rain barrel, that will be credited to your utility account.

With community gardens gaining popularity in Central Alberta, Red Deer is doing their best to keep up with the need and it was also highlighted at the event.

Red Deer is adding a fourth community garden across from the county fire hall on 30th Ave and 19th Street.

The garden will have 65 plots for planting, an orchard in the middle of the area along with picnic tables and a parking lot.

Ecological Services Operations Coordinator with the City of Red Deer, Ken Lehman said he expects the interest in community gardens to keep growing.

“I would say the trend is still climbing and the momentum is still building and it’s exciting to be a part of that.”

Registration for plots begin April 22 on a first-come first-serve basis.
