Update: Saturday, November 23rd, 2019, from Lynn Brown Lacombe Seniors Bonspiel Committee:

Through the week of November 18 – 22, Lacombe Curling Club resounded with calls of “Sweep! Yes! No!”, as 24 teams took to the ice for the annual Lacombe Seniors Bonspiel. Curlers from the area competed in 4 divisions of round robin play - Masters – where the aggregate age of the 4 curlers must be at least 265 years; Stick Division – at least 2 team members must use sticks to deliver their rocks; and two Mixed Divisions in which 1 or more player must be of the opposite gender.

Wins earn a team $20 in the round robin and at the end of the week each team in the division has additional cash prizes based on placing – all made possible through the tremendous support of local businesses!

Numerous other businesses provide door prizes, and with a banquet on Wednesday - catered locally, and daily lunch supplied by the club seniors, everyone is well fed, and enjoys the social aspect of the week!

Many competitors named this as the best Seniors Bonspiel in the area, and that is demonstrated by the fact that all teams participating this year have stated that they wish to be contacted next year – and a waiting list has been started.

A change in season also means a change in sports, as hockey and curling push football and soccer out of the local headlines.

One of the most popular curling bonspiel's in Lacombe is getting ready for another year, as the Lacombe Seniors Bonspiel will kick off on Monday down at the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex.

The 24 teams, two draws a day tournament has been going on for over a decade now with Seniors Bonspiel Committee Chairman Ken Brown and his wife Lynn at the helm.

Ken says they had to double the number of masters group to accommodate their regulars.

“We changed to two masters because of the age groups. Our curlers are getting older and older, so we’ve put in two masters groups, and the aggregate has to be 265, so basically everybody has to be a little over 65 to make the total.”

Teams in the Stick division requires at least to two players to use a special stick designed to avoid players from going to one knee when launching the rock, and the Mixed division requires at least one player to be of the opposite sex.

Ken says they always receive great support from the community, something they are incredibly grateful for.

“The community supports us so well, like the businesses; we just can’t believe how much they support us. It’s a very strong support throughout the entire community really.”

The Seniors Bonspiel starts on Monday, November 18th until the 22nd, with the first draw scheduled for 9:30 am each day, and the second draw happening at 1:00 pm.

You can see the full schedule below. The scores will be updated at the start of each day.
