A big weekend in Sylvan Lake will bring Canada's national summer sport to Central Alberta.

The War on the Shore tournament at the Nexsource Centre will take place this weekend. The lacrosse association, the Sylvan Lake Buccaneers are hosting over 360 players to the games for their second annual event.

Pam Murphy, tournament chair says they were excited to have this opportunity once again.

“We started this tournament last year; it was our first time hosting,”

Murphy explains it took some time to be able to get the rights to hold the event.

“The Sylvan Lake Buccaneers is the host association they have been on their own for the last four years, but they used to be under the Red Deer Lacrosse association but they built theirs up so that we would have the ability to host.”

Last year, they hosted teams from pee wee to midget but this year they were able to expand to novice as well.

First game is at 4 pm on Friday with finals on Sunday afternoon but Murphy says there’s something for everyone, including a small fundraiser.

“We also have a great prize table, and a fastest shot competition as well at 1:40pm on Saturday where everyone can come participate for $2.00”

Murphy says the tournament has bigger meaning too.

“It really is just to grow the sport of lacrosse as it is Canada’s national sport, and if you’ve ever been to a national Lacrosse game it’s just a really cool experience.”

More information on the tournament can be found on the War on the Shore Facebook page.
