Spring has sprung and with it, thaw has begun. Local municipalities are issuing warnings about thin ice and flooding as the weather begins to warm up and snow begins to melt.

The Town of Ponoka has recently closed access to the trail system and public lands of the River Valley due to flooding concerns.

The town recommends all citizens to be cautious around the Battle river and to stay away from the banks of the river. With ice jam activity in effect, the town advises that children and pets are kept off the ice at all times.

If a pet happens to find danger, the town says calling for help is the best choice of action rather than attempting a rescue on your own.

Ponoka residents can report flooding issues at 403-783-4431. To report flooding that may require prompt attention, call 403-783-0142.

Additionally, the entrance to the Rotary Recreation Park in Red Deer is also closed and residents are asked to obey all posted signs.

At this time, there are no flooding concerns in the City of Lacombe, but ice safety should be practiced at all times.
