The Alberta RCMP were busy this August long weekend, conducting traffic stops and patrolling high volume traffic areas while promoting safe driving.

Between July 31st and August 3rd, a total of 2559 traffic tickets were issued, as well as 420 warnings. This is a 26% increase in roadway offences compared to the Heritage Day long weekend of 2019.

1972 drivers were ticketed for speeding, 34 were charged with impaired driving, and 6 drivers received roadside suspensions.

Ten motorists were also caught driving at excessive speeds, meaning 51 km/h or more over the posted speed limit.

Only July 31st near Brooks, one driver was stopped doing 195 km/h in a 110 km/h zone on Highway 1.

On August 2nd, a driver was stopped near Lake Louise doing 152 km/h in a 90 km/h zone. The driver also had a toddler in the vehicle who was improperly secured in a five-point harness car seat. The officer educated the driver on the proper use of a five-point harness.
