Red Deer County issues fire restriction order   

Due to dry conditions, a fire restriction is now in effect for Red Deer County.  

The restriction came into effect on April 19 at 11 a.m.  

During the fire restriction, all new outdoor fires within the boundaries of Red Deer County are prohibited, and no new fire permits will be issued.   

The fire restriction does not apply to:    

• Fires that are contained within cooking and heating appliances, and are fueled by fluids, gases, or wood pellets   

• Fires contained within industrial facilities for operational purposes  

• Approved Gas/Propane fueled fire pits*/stoves/barbecues  

• Catalytic or infrared-style heaters  

• Safe acceptable residential fire pits, and enclosed incinerators  

 Safe acceptable residential fire pits are at least 1 meter clearance measured from the nearest fireplace edge of buildings, property lines, or other combustible material.  

They are constructed of materials such as bricks or rocks that are non-combustible, the base of the fire burning area is not less than 0.3 meters above the surrounding grade, and the fire chamber does not exceed 1.25 meters in width, and is at least 0.4 meters but not more than 0.6 meters in depth.  

Off-highway vehicles can start wildfires. The county is asking residents to frequently check to ensure hotspots are free of debris, and make sure mufflers and spark arrestors are working properly.
