Red Deer Rebels Owner, President and General Manager Brent Sutter today announced Ian Gordon as the team’s new Director of Goaltending/Goalie Coach.

Gordon joins the Rebels from the Seattle Thunderbirds where he served as Goaltending Coach for the past eight seasons.

The North Battleford, Saskatchewan native has spent time in the Hockey Canada system as Goaltending Coach for the U17 program. He also owns and operates Edmonton-based Ian Gordon Goaltending.

He played in the Western Hockey League from 1992-95 for the Swift Current Broncos, winning a WHL Championship and competing at the Memorial Cup in 1993, and the Saskatoon Blades.

Gordon attended camp with the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks and signed with the Calgary Flames in 1995 before going on to play two years in the American Hockey League and three in the International Hockey League with Grand Rapids. He then headed overseas to German Elite League (DEL) where he played 13 seasons and retired in 2013 as the league’s all-time leader in goalie games played and shutouts. Gordon won a league title with the Frankfurt Lions in 2003.

“With Ian’s experience working with young prospects and experienced goaltenders in our league, we’re excited to add him to our coaching and scouting staff,” said Sutter.
