Red Deer College’s student athletes held a drive-thru food drive at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre on March 27th collecting $323 in donations and 1,225 pounds of food.

This was led by Amy Szymanek (Queens Basketball), Jaycee Bourke (Queens Curling), and Devin Saunders (Kings Cross Country Running/Indoor Track), involved RDC student-athletes from a variety of Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) sports.

“The RDC Student-Athletes Advisory Council has been a catalyst in identifying and organizing a range of important initiatives this year, such as the Drive-Thru Food Drive,” says Kylie Thomas, RDC Vice President Academic & Research. “The student-athletes have shown tremendous leadership and dedication in continuing their mission of connecting with the community throughout the year despite the absence of competition.”

The students working the drive-thru adhered to all provincial protocols including wearing a mask and by practicing social distancing. Overall their donation was very appreciated.

“Over the past year, the Red Deer Food Bank has faced challenges and overcome them because of the overwhelming support from our community,” says Alice Kolisnyk, Deputy Director, Red Deer Food Bank Society. “The RDC Athletics Drive-Thru Food Drive is another example of how Red Deer steps up to assist others in need. The donations gathered at this event will go a long way to feed those who are vulnerable. Thank you RDC Athletics and Red Deer.”

This year, because there was no formal competition RDC will be giving out their 2020-2021 Awards and Recognition based on academic achievements, volunteerism, dedication to training, and leadership within their teams. The Athletics Year-End Video featuring the experiences of athletes this year is set to release in early April.
