While you are out enjoying your Thanksgiving long weekend Alberta RCMP are going to be on the roads and streets. This year they are hoping to crack down on impaired driving as part of Operation Impact 2020.

In 2019, there were four fatalities and 177 injuries as a result of 305 motor vehicle collisions over the Thanksgiving long weekend.

RCMP is asking Albertans to take the following precautions on the road at all times:

  • Do not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Do not drive tired
  • Do not drive and text
  • Ensure all vehicle occupants are properly restrained

Fatigue or using drugs or alcohol can severely impact your reaction time or judgement when driving.

"Impaired driving is always a concern when there is an increase of traffic on our roadways,” explains Superintendent Rick Gardner, Alberta Traffic Sheriffs. “We want Albertans to remember that it is never acceptable to drive impaired — holiday long weekends are no exception."

If you witness dangerous driving on your travels this long weekend, RCMP are asking drivers to report it by pulling over and calling 9-1-1.
