One Okotokian sprang into action recently, rescuing a boy who was in danger of drowning.

Kristy Packwood was visiting Sylvan Lake with her family earlier in August when she heard the distressed cries of a young boy who was struggling to stay above the water's surface.

After moving closer to the scene and confirming with the boy's friends that he was in trouble, she lowered herself in the water and towed the boy to safety.

Packwood says the boy wasn't terribly far away from the ladder, but the wind and choppy water had clearly disoriented him.

"He probably could have done it on his own to get over to the ladder, but I think when you're panicked like that, you lose some of those senses of direction and your capabilities and things like that."

The boy was able to climb the ladder himself, and Packwood sat with him to make sure he was okay before he was walked home by his friends.

Packwood says she later realized she hadn't even asked his name.

"In hindsight, I didn't even catch his name, so it all happened really quickly obviously. Once I took a breath and realized what had just gone down, I thought 'oh, I don't even know that kid's name!' I haven't heard anything to help me identify him."

With how quickly it all happened, she says it didn't even really sink-in for a while.

"Initially I think we all just went 'oh wow," but as we were walking away my husband said 'you just saved a kid,' and I said 'yeah I guess I did!' He shared that with friends and family, and one of our friends contacted the news, so that's how it's all come about."

She says she hopes the incident goes to show how quickly dangerous situations can escalate in bodies of water, and that people shouldn't overestimate their abilities or underestimate larger bodies of water.
