The Lacombe Athletic Park Association (LAPA) will celebrate the completion of the first phase of its expansion project with a grand opening recognizing sponsors and local officials at MEGlobal Athletic Park on Saturday, May 7, 2022.

Phase 1 included a doubling of the size of the field house with additional washrooms, change rooms, storage, meeting rooms, an elevator and a fully accessible viewing tower with space for media and coaches as well as timing facilities for the running track. A contribution of $2 million from MEGlobal Canada ULC made the project possible. Phase 2 of expansion will be the running track and field infrastructure.

"On behalf of the LAPA we are pleased to announce the completion of Phase 1 of our expansion plans,” said LAPA president Jay Adamson. “With the added dressing room space, washrooms, building accessibility and viewing tower, we feel we will be able to bring in larger, more diverse sporting events to Lacombe and area. We are so fortunate to have great community partners in the City of Lacombe, Lacombe County and Wolf Creek Public Schools who are in full support of the expansion phases."

"Of course, none of this would be possible without the strong partnership with MEGlobal and their financial commitment of $2 million dollars to our project. The citizens of Lacombe, the County and Wolf Creek students will be able to reap the benefits of the expanded park for many years to come. We look forward to the many more events we can host and the positive economic impact Phase 1 of expansion brought to the community. Watch out for Phase 2 - Track and Field Facility development.”

Adamson also noted MEGlobal will retain naming rights to the park until 2040.

MEGlobal Vice President of Manufacturing Rocco Schurink said his company is pleased to see Phase 1 complete and ready to support expanded athletic and community events.

“We are so proud to be part of a project that will bring new opportunities to the community while enhancing the experience for players and fans alike,” he said. “It’s an honor to put our name on this facility.”

Work on Phase 1 of the MEGlobal Athletic Park expansion began in September 2020 and created approximately 200 construction jobs over the past nine months.
