Family Literacy Day 2017

Family Literacy Day has been celebrated nationwide since 1999 with the goal of reminding parents the importance of building reading skills with their children while having fun!

Many Central Alberta business and classrooms partnered up – Allie from the Sunrise Show even went to Mrs. MacIntosh’s kindergarten class to read some books!

If you’re looking for ways to make reading a regular part of your kids daily routine in FUN and UNIQUE ways, Sunny 94 has some ideas....

Visit The Library

Your kids know what kinds of things they like (Dinosaurs, Cars, Castles, Candy) so taking them to the library and having them pick the books out is a great way to make sure they’ll have fun reading the story! The Mary C Moore Public Library in Lacombe has a huge children’s section to look through!

Make Reading Into A Game

Kids love to play games! I know it sounds crazy, but pairing games with reading would make it more fun! Write a bunch of words on paper and put them in a hat - Like book genres (Adventure) or characters (Dragon) and have a scavenger hunt in the library for books that match whatever was pulled out of the hat!

Read By Rainbow

Pick a book with a cover from each color of the rainbow and read one a day each day of the week for 7 days of ROYGBIV fun!

Make A Zoo Theme

Kids love animals – a lot. So if you and your child made it your goal to only read books with animals in them or with animals as the main character not only would their knowledge span beyond cats and rabbits, but they would have fun while doing it!

Around The World in 7 Books

The world is a big place and your child hasn’t seen very much of it yet, so bring the world to them by reading books based in different places around the world! One week you’re reading about kitten adventures in France and the next you’re learning about what it’s like going to school in Mexico!

These are just a few ways to have fun while reading with your child, maybe you and them can come up with your own wild ideas! Happy reading from the team at Sunny 94!
