Thursday, October 1st is International Day of Older Persons and communities are celebrating in a couple of different ways.

In Red Deer, seniors are invited to reserve free activities at the Collicutt Centre, G.H. Dawe Community Centre, or the Recreation Centre.

“We are happy to have our older adults join us for free activities on October 1,” said Barb McKee, Recreation Superintendent of Red Deer. “By highlighting programs and activities available to seniors, we hope to encourage older Red Deerians to stay healthy, active, and connected.”

Keep in mind, use of change rooms and lockers will be limited. It is recommended that those attending come prepared and only bring the essentials. Masks are encouraged though not mandatory.

You can reserve an activity by clicking here.

In Ponoka, the Royal Canadian Legion will co-host some activities at the Ponoka Civic Centre from 10 AM to 11 AM. A museum display will be available that will feature historical artifacts concerning Ponoka’s History.

The town of Ponoka will also be showcasing newly designed park spaces that are currently underway. Those who attend will be encouraged to check out the new segment of the walking trail located between the Civic Centre and the green bridge at the north trailhead of the river valley trail system.

Coffee and treats may also be available outside of the Civic Centre, weather permitting.

Those attending are encouraged to sanitize their hands when they arrive and physically distance themselves from others. Masks are encouraged but not mandatory.

As always, if you have flu-like symptoms or have been in close contact with someone with a confirmed or probable case of COVID-19, stay home.
