Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw remains concerned about the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the province but asks Albertans to remain vigilant with following the new measures.

“Like all Albertans I am alarmed by the rising number of case numbers reported today and over the weekend. This is another reminder that COVID-19 has a long incubation period meaning the actions we take today will not be seen until 10 to 14 days from now,” said Dr. Hinshaw.

She believes it will be some time before we start seeing the effect of the new measures the Alberta Government announced last week.

Not all Albertans have been taking the new measures lightly and others stand firmly against them. Over the course of the weekend, several Calgarians stood outside Calgary’s City Hall in protest of the new restrictions put in place. Several of them were not wearing masks despite mandatory mask bylaws among other measures Albertans are being asked to cooperate with.

“It’s important to remember that there is a democratic right to express concerns and again with protests we have issued guidance with respect to rallies and demonstrations that includes measures for how individuals who want to express their opinions can keep themselves and others safe,” said Hinshaw.

The Chief Medical Officer says that while all Albertans may not be considered high-risk, the virus is unpredictable and many long-term effects of the virus are still unknown.
