The undefeated Cold Lake Fighter Jets went head to head against the Central Alberta Buccaneers claiming victory in the Buccaneer’s first loss of the season with a score of 38-3.

Buc's Head Coach Gary LaGrange was frustrated by the outcome of the game but didn’t anticipate the winning streak to continue for much longer.

“I think based on the little talking to I gave them last game, I said, ‘We’re lucky to win that game and the game before.”

The coach mentioned missing some of their key players for the game which resulted in relying on other sometimes less practiced players. However, LaGrange wasn’t completely disheartened by the game because, despite the loss, the Buccaneers had plenty of opportunities.

“These guys played pretty good defensive had to settle in and they did. We got our chances if we had conversions and actually executed a few plays. It’s growth.”

Once the defensive line had settled in, the Jets were certainly slowed on the scoreboard only scoring about seven points in the second half.

LaGrange believes that some of the team’s issues stem from those on the offensive line who could use more work, practice, and memorization of the plays.

“We haven’t had a complete O line in practice yet. We had one on Thursday and it was like ‘Oh wow, we got an O line,’ and there’s only so much you can do in practice. So, that’s part of it.”

The coach and the team hope to see the game as a sort of intense practice and will hopefully be able to use their loss to their advantage in the near future.

“I told the guys this means nothing and that’s why we gambled on third down a lot of times. Our O needs practice under fire and those guys need to be under fire to harden up and takes some knocks and look at the film and say ‘oh geez, you’re right coach that was there,’ it will come. The athleticism is there.”

The Central Alberta Buccaneers hit the field again in Fort McMurray on July 6th where they hope to demonstrate what they’ve learned from their first loss .
