The Government of Alberta has improved their rent assistance program. The program redesign is believed to provide support for 11,600 households which is 3,800 more than before.

The program redesign includes a rebalance across rent assistance and capital funding

The application for the Rent Assistant Benefit opens on April 1. For this benefit you must be below the local income threshold.   

A Temporary Rent Assistant Program will open for applications on May 1. This program will help provide a modest subsidy to eligible tenants in Alberta’s seven major centres including Red Deer. Households are eligible if they are employed or have been employed in the last 24 months and are not receiving social assistance including:

  • Income support
  • Learning income support
  • Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped
  • Alberta Seniors Benefit
  • Guaranteed income supplement
  • Old age security
