Now that wildfire season has officially passed with this latest dump of snow, the Government of Alberta has released some information about this year’s wildfire. 

In 2022, 56 per cent of wildfires were caused by human activity around 38 per cent of wildfires were caused by lightning and about six per cent are still under investigation. 1,254 wildfires in Alberta burned about 153,124 hectares. This is down from the last five year average (2017-2018) which  is about 1,110 wildfires burning more than 190,000 hectares. 

The end of this year’s legislated wildfire season was on October 31, 2022.
