From Ponoka RCMP:

June 24, 2019

Following an investigation into three break and enters that occurred in late May, the RCMP have arrested and charged one male from Ponoka.  Property from the three different break-ins was recovered and returned to owners.

On May 27, 2019 two different rural properties were victims of break-ins.  

At one shop, a Yamaha Grizzly 550, another Yamaha and a generator were stolen.  While at this shop, RCMP recovered a truck which had been stolen from Wetaskiwin on May 25.  Inside the truck was stolen property including tools, a generator a Yamaha 50 cc motor bike, welder and other items.

The other property broken into suffered the theft of a Yamaha 50 cc motor bike, welder and various tools.  It was determined that the property in the truck was the property stolen from the second break-in.  The owner was able to recover all the stolen property.

On May 29, a third shop break-in was reported, and the property owner was also able to identify and recover stolen vehicle from the above mentioned truck.

Investigation continued in collaboration with Wetaskiwin RCMP.

On June 20, 2019 Ponoka RCMP arrested 20-year-old Caleb Joseph Shimwell without incident. He has been charged with 18 criminal code charges in relation to the above incidents.  Charges include:

-          Break and enter and theft over $5,000

-          Possession of stolen property over $5,000

-          Trafficking in stolen property

-          Mischief under $5,000

-          Fail to comply with a probation order

-          Fail to comply with a recognizance

A judicial interim release hearing has been held, and Shimwell was released from custody. He is scheduled to appear in Provincial Court in Ponoka on July 19, 2019.
