If you`ve ever considered a job as a bus driver, Wolf Creek Public Schools would like to hear from you.

The school board was recently updated on driver attraction and retention, with it brought to their attention the supply of drivers has become very scarce, particularly for spare drivers.

Wolf Creek Secretary Treasurer Joe Henderson says they`ve already been left in some less than ideal situations “we’ve had a couple of incidents this year where we haven’t been able to find replacements for drivers. Where we don’t have enough spare drivers we will use shop personnel or even our management personnel who have training as bus drivers will also drive sometimes to fill it in, but that weakens us if an emergency happens, and the people who are supposed to be dealing with the emergency are out on a route, it would potentially create a pretty dangerous situation for us”.

Henderson adds it also puts school field trips, sporting events and other school outings outside of the regular routes at jeopardy.

It makes it difficult for people to take time off, or if someone is sick.

Most drivers would start off as a spare driver until they are trained, and as opportunities come along, they could move along to regular routes.

Henderson says the majority of their drivers are long term; they develop a solid relationship with families and play a very important role in how children preform in schools.

Requirements include a valid driver’s license, clean driver’s abstract, 3 demerits or less.

The school division provides training; including help to obtain your class 2 license.
