More than 30,000 Canadians in over 130 communities across Canada will take part in the MS Walk this Sunday, with the closest walk being in Red Deer at Great Chief Park, starting at 9am.

Multiple sclerosis, or MS as it's more commonly known as, is a damaging disease in which the insulating covers of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are damaged, slowly causing more and more issues over time.

But living with MS hasn't stopped one local participant from being involved in her community.

Stettler resident Philippa Brysiuk was diagnosed with MS 15 years ago, and has been doing the walk ever since.

To date, she has raised more than $110,000 to find the cure for MS, all thanks to her incredibly supportive friends, family, and coworkers, as well as a drive to go out and fundraise.

At the time of publication, Brysiuk is currently the second highest single online fundraising, raising $3,180.00 for this year’s run. Her team, known as “The Memory Lapses”, based on one of the side effects of MS, has raised a total of $3,530.00 to date.

She says living with the disease is not easy, and turns the simplest tasks, like taking a shower, into something incredibly draining.

"I get tired out really easily. I can't stand for more than about ten minutes at a time. It makes day to day living difficult. I'm off work right now, because it affects cognitive function as well, so I can't find words quite often, I can't see, I've actually fallen asleep at my computer. Fatigue is not tiredness; it's a bone debilitating exhaustion. To have to take a rest after you shower, it's that sort of exhaustion."
