Every year collision rates in Red Deer spike during the first snowfalls, and return of slick conditions.

RCMP is out with a few friendly reminders on what you need to keep in mind if you find yourself in a fender bender or something more serious.

Sgt. Kevin Halwa is with RCMP's Traffic Unit in Red Deer.

“First and foremost of course is making sure that everyone is ok. Aside from that, assuming everyone is fine and healthy, you need to exchange some information, exchange some insurance information and after that if the damage is over $2000 combined damage between the two vehicles, then that will need to be reported to the RCMP. The common rule of thumb though, if you think the body shop is going to get out a paint gun, it’s probably going to be over $2000”.

In terms of what information you need to exchange with the other driver involved, Halwa explains.

“Your information, be your driver’s license and driver’s license number, as well as your personal contact information, and the insurance information for the vehicle. With our smart phones that we carry in our pockets, they take some pretty darn good pictures, my English teacher used to tell me that ‘a picture is worth a 1000 words’ and a couple of pictures will certainly help you out if need be”.

You should call 911 if there is serious injury or if you suspect drugs or alcohol are involved.

If either of the vehicles involved is not drivable, or if a driver fails to produce registration and insurance, you should call the RCMP complaint line (403-343-5575).
