Communication is now flowing to students and parents following a threat at Lacombe Composite High School on Friday.

Wolf Creek Public Schools Superintendent Jayson Lovell says it was a low credibility threat made on Snapchat, with information coming from outside the school shared with school administration mid-afternoon.

“There was not at any time an imminent threat at students or staff, precautions were taken, and one Lacombe Comp student was involved in this situation.  That student was detained by the Lacombe Police Service and taken off property.  Of course when that happens they have to go through their process, which they did.  The student is currently not in the school”.

Lovell explains what's classified as a low credibility threat.

“A low level of concern is defined as worrisome behaviour and that is where a threat is vague and indirect, and it sometimes can come in the way of a drawing, writing, in this case it was social media”.

He confirms there was never a gun involved.

“There was no weapon involved at any time; no access to weapons, at no time was there any situation in which there was a concern with regards to weapons”.

Lovell says threats are assessed at 3 different levels, low, medium and high and communication rolls out in different ways for each threat, now that they have clear information and understanding, they are sharing further information with the school community today.

“Staff were apprised and made aware of the situation this morning, we also have a letter going home to parents today, and that will be through Power Announcement which is an electronic way of communicating with our parents so it will be in the body of an email with some information for parents.  Students are also going to be made aware of some information so that they understand how the matter was addressed”.

Lacombe Police did arrest one other youth who is not a student of WCPS, both youths involved face charges of Uttering Threats and Mischief.

The Superintendent is commending staff at the school for the way they responded.

He invites any parents with questions or further concerns to contact school Principal Val Yaremchuk.
