Wolf Creek Public School Board is sticking to a commitment to look at their own practices to find cost savings as the School Division is faced with tighter budgets.

They've found a couple of solutions to work towards a pledge to reduce their own internal Board Governance costs by $20,000.

Superintendent of Schools Jayson Lovell explains one way the Board will be reducing some of their compensation.

“The biggest one being a reduction of 3 days to 2 days per month for Trustee preparation, and those are days that are set aside for dedicated time to really review materials and information that assist them in their role as a Trustee. That reduction from 3 days down to 2 days results in an estimated $14,400 in savings”.

Lovell says the Board also voted to exclude travel time to Board meetings from per diem allowance, ensuring their practices are on par with expectations of staff within the division.

“They really felt it would be important to be aligned, so for example when other staff are travelling into the office here for meetings, coming to do work on a day to day basis, that compensation is not necessarily there for regular employees so the Board really wanted to make sure their practices reflect an aligned approach”.

The school division expects budget challenges on the horizon following an unanticipated drop in enrollments, translating into a 1.8 million dollar reduction overall.
