Some friendly reminders from the province, RCMP and local volunteer groups to slow down, and use caution if you're heading out on area highways tomorrow as scores of volunteers will be in the ditches for this year's highway clean-up campaign.

Locally, you can expect to see groups out on highways 2, 2A, 11, 11A, 12 and 53 between 7 am and 5 pm.

Mike Baik with Alberta Transportation explains just how many volunteers are participating.

“In the Red Deer area we have over 80 groups participating, we have the Lacombe Handicraft and Lapidary Guild; we have Lacombe Outsiders 4H Club”.

Volunteers are paid by the kilometer, raising funds for their non-profit and community groups.

Last year the Alberta government paid out about 1.1 million to just over 700 volunteer organizations for their help cleaning more than 13,000 kilometers of provincial highway right of ways.

The over 17,000 thousand volunteers across the province collected more than 53,000 bags of garbage.
