It's National Volunteer Week, shining the light on some of the unsung heroes in our communities.

Volunteer Central will be hosting events all week long, thanking the people who dedicate their time to making a meaningful difference.

Board Chair Jennifer Blair says there are so many great volunteers across Central Alberta who don't get the recognition they deserve.

"Volunteering can sometimes be a bit of a thankless job, and so many non-profits all across Central Alberta really rely on volunteers to make their operations run. So National Volunteer Week is a really great way to recognize these people, and celebrate their efforts."

Blair hopes the week might also lead some people to consider volunteering their time, adding even if you can't donate money to a non-profit, your time is just as valuable.

Volunteers are essential for non-profit groups to operate according to Blair.

"Quite honestly, I don't think there's a single non-profit in Central Alberta that would be able to function to full capacity without volunteers. Budgets are so limited in the sector that without volunteers, we wouldn't have nearly the same number of events, non-profits, or activities that these volunteers support."

Volunteer Central will be hosting events all week to celebrate, including a free pancake breakfast this morning (April 25th) from 7:30 to 9:30 at the Scott Block Theatre, with Roy and Christine Sturgeon of Lacombe's Flying Cross Ranch to deliver a keynote address on how they use their horses to help kids in anti-bullying, women's empowerment and other equine assisted programs.

Tonight Lacombe FCSS and the City of Lacombe will recognize volunteers at the annaul Volunteer Appreciation Night at the Lacombe Memorial Centre starting at 7pm.

Tomorrow night it's Blackfalds turn to highlight the efforts of volunteers at the Community Hall starting at 6, while Sylvan Lake will host it's annual Volunteer Gala and Awards night on Saturday at the Community Centre, doors open at 5:30.
