With the help from the community, a group of six visually impaired kids from Lacombe County are hoping to attend a space and science camp in the United States in September.

The week-long camp takes place in Huntsville, Alabama and has adapted all its equipment and programs to meet the needs of visually impaired children.

One of the kids is 13-year-old Jayden Scheopfner, who suffers from ocular albinism, a condition that reduces the coloring of the iris causing his eyes to twitch and lose focus.

His father Jerry said the cost of the trip is about $2,000 per kid and has created a GoFundMe Page to help cover some of the costs.

“We had a conference call with all the individuals involved as far as parents and the kids and all the kids on the call, I’m pretty sure, were doing backflips.”

“It’s not a thing a lot of the families, I mean even myself included in this, would possibly entertain just simply for funding reasons.”

It’s not just this group of kids Jerry has in mind; the funds raised would be used to help kids in the future attend the camp.

“All the extra funds that are raised this year, that don’t get used, actually get set in a separate account that will go towards helping kids next year go.”

“I may not necessarily agree with the GoFundMe Page, but if it’s going to help someone else, maybe somebody else next year, I’ll swallow my pride.”

The goal is to raise at least $3,000.
