The Moonwalkers Play Centre in Alix has been closed permanently.

At a special meeting last week, the villages council decided to close the play centre's doors effective immediately thanks to a diminishing customer base, and increased operating costs.

Mayor Arlene Nelson says Moonwalkers hadn't been as successful as they had hoped.

"Due to I think the downturn in the economy, and the fact that there were about 3 or 4 other play centre's opened 6 months after Moonwalkers did. But you go to where it's most convenient."

Alix opened the play centre back in 2013, hoping it would be a long term economic anchor in their community, that would bring in visitors and tourism dollars.

Nelson says Council is now asking residents if they have any ideas for what the building could be used for going forward.

"We haven't made any formal proposals because there's too many things to consider. So at this point in time we haven't settled on anything we're going to take a closer look at, we're just informally taking ideas."

Nelson says she thought Moonwalkers was an excellent facility, and is sad to see it closed.

Adding many customers she spoke to said it was the cleanest play centre they'd been to.
