A few more upgrades are on the way to the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex.

While the finishing touches to the Sportsplex renovations are completed this summer, a little more work will be taking place too.

At the end of its life cycle, the plant that creates the ice for both Canpak Ice surfaces, and 6 Freightliner curling ice sheets will be replaced.

Mayor Steve Christie says it should only affect a few early season hockey camps, but the upgrade is needed.

"The ice plant is on its last leg. We've been having some issues with it in late 2016, and early 2017. It's been on the 10 year capital plan for I'm going to say 4 or 5 years, we've extended it as far as we can, and once the renovations are complete that facility will almost be brand new."

Christie says the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre will also have its filter system replaced, a system that was installed back in 1994.

"That one amazes me. I've been here for a long time and they outdate me. Like I say, our guys do great work and have been keep that system up and running. We're not about changing things because we think we should. We're about changing things because they're at their life's end."

The current filter system has caused some problems for pool staff lately.

Most recently, the hot tub had to be closed for a week because of it.

Those will be the behind the scenes upgrades being done this summer, but a little more aesthetic work still needs completed too.

Many were wary about renovating an aging facility, and questioned why not just build an entirely new rink.

But with upgrades to the front entrance, dressing rooms, and lobbies, the Gary Moe Sportsplex's new facelift has it looking like a new building.

Christie says he understands that it's hard to see a renovation through to its end, but from the feedback he's received, it was worth the wait.

"Talking to the user groups, they are just doing backflips With regards to the dressing rooms, or space in the lobby. Talking to grandparents that come watch their grandkids play and just the warm room, and the upgrades have been very well received. So if we have to take some heat in the beginning to get the result that we do. That's okay."

The hallway to the dressing rooms will be widened this summer, and the City will also be planning to patch up a leaky roof in the future to finish up the buildings modernization, and keep people using the Sportsplex for years to come.
