Two recently graduated high school students here in Lacombe got a bit of a financial boost, thanks to scholarships handed out by the Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce on Thursday.

Executive Director with the Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce Monica Bartman says the Chamber’s Annual Scholarship Award looks more at the student’s community involvement rather than overall grade point average.

“We don’t look so much at grades, but more about community involvement is a big part of it, how they have contributed to the City of Lacombe as a student. We all know, no matter how old you are you can still contribute to the community where you live.”

One winner is Brooke McBurney from Lacombe Composite High School, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Calgary.

She says she has been involved in sports most of her life, and was always willing to lend a hand in school.

“I play hockey, and softball, and I’ve been really involved in our school leadership programs.”

The other winner was Mark DeWit, who graduated from Central Alberta Christian high School, and is going for a Bachelor of Commerce at Red Deer College.

“You had to be involved in the community, so my dad’s business was involved in the chamber, Edge Design Solutions, and that qualified me to apply.”

Each student received $1250.00 from the Chamber.
