Twin sisters in grade four at Bentley School are trying to spread some cheer through song. The song was written by Andra who also plays the ukulele during the video performance. However, the song itself was a bit of a family affair.

“A couple of years ago, Andra picked up a ukulele because she was inspired by one of her distant cousins at a family reunion. She’s just been teaching herself little bits here and there just through YouTube. She and I practice little songs. I don’t play I’ve just been learning with her,” said Erin Schofer, the twin’s mother.

In the performance, Andra is accompanied by her twin sister Emera who joins in on the vocals. Together, they share a love of music.

“It was fun. We sing together all the time,” said Emera.

“They are singing together all the time, but Andra is definitely the more the outgoing one. Being twins, they’re alike in a lot of ways but they’re very different personalities. Emera is just more the quiet, reserved, she doesn’t like being in the spotlight very much. Whereas, her sister just doesn’t shy away from it,” explained Erin.

According to their mom, Andra has been pretty interested in the TV Show Songland throughout the pandemic. Between the TV show, and seeing Erin finish up teaching her grade four class online, Andra felt the need to share her song.

“The reason I wrote the song was that I wanted teachers to know around the world there was someone out there who cared about how much work they did and how much time and effort they put into all the work,” explained Andra.

For Andra, writing the song came naturally, after a few pointers from her mom.

“We changed the lines a lot and my mom taught me how to write a chorus and how to write the verses, and stuff,” added Andra.

She and Emera were hoping to spread a bit of positivity at Bentley School. Erin was in charge of sharing the video with teachers and staff at the school. Andra chose to share it with all of her grade four friends and classmates.

Naturally, Erin was quite touched to see her daughter take action and alleviate some of the stress she and many other teachers face right now.

“She’s seen the struggle and the stuff we’ve been all going through at home being a stay-at-home mom and a teacher and everything. She was just kind of inspired by watching me at home teaching. She just wanted to do something for the teachers at school and that’s how it came about. I didn’t even know she was writing a song - it just kind of came out of nowhere,” said Erin.

Andra hopes to be a singer and songwriter when she grows up. Her next project is going to incorporate some new elements.

“Emera plays the piano so we’re thinking of doing a duet with piano and ukulele,” said Andra.

The twins miss their friends and teachers at school but hope their song brightens the day of those stuck at home until everyone can be together once again.
