It's not too often we see a weather phenomena in Alberta, but on Friday a whole community was shaken up after a tornado touched down near Three Hills.

Luckily no was injured, but it sure caught the attention of a nation, putting the community on the map.

Richard Thiessen, who works in Three Hills, was out in the yard when he and his co-workers noticed the tornado.

“I looked up and was like ‘hey that’s a pretty cool cloud, I wonder if that could develop into a tornado.’ We walk around the corner of the shop and were like ‘Oh look, a tornado.’”

“It was pretty crazy, because I’ve seen a few tornados in my life, but not that close. So I whipped out my phone and videoed it.”

The twister was moving east at 50 km per hour and reportedly lasted about 30 minutes, according to RCMP reports.

Thiessen said they're not too uncommon for the area, but has never seen one of this magnitude.

“We get at least one a year in this area, but they’re usually pretty small and most of the time they’re out in a field or they hit a bin somewhere and we see twisted metal. Usually, it’s not that close to a town.”

“Yeah, it was just awesome.”

According to Three Hills RCMP, most of the damage the tornado left behind was to one rural property.
