UPDATE: Fortis has restored power to the majority of Penhold as well as the two areas around Blackfalds

Many Central Albertans may be short on sleep after a night of thunderstorm activity in the region.

A large portion of Penhold is currently without power following high winds, and lightening shortly after 3:30 am.

Fire Chief Jim Pendergast says they've dealt with some power pole fires and downed lines, resulting in some road closures.

“Lucina Street and Waskasoo Avenue, and then we also have a power line down in the compound behind George’s Farm Equipment and we have Fortis just assessing that right now”.

There are also lines down in the back alley of Fleming Avenue between Emma Street and Lucina Street.

It's been a long night for the City of Red Deer's Electric Light and Power Department after 4 trees fell onto power lines in different areas of the City during a thunderstorm that hit after 9 last night.

Clearview Ridge, the downtown, Gaetz around Parkland Mall, some of Normandeau, Kentwood, Rosedale, Michener, Clearview, Deerpark, Riverside Meadows, Eastview and Grandview areas all dealt with outages.

There is also a small outage in Blackfalds due to lightening, and another small outage just to the north of Blackfalds due to a tree on the line.

We’ve also received reports an area north of Olds was hit with marble sized hail.

Southern Alberta was also hit with hail the size of two-dollar coins in some areas.

The Strathmore, Brooks and Vulcan counties were placed under a tornado watch just before 8:30, but there were no reports of twisters.

Utility company Enmax says about 22-hundred customers were without power after the worst conditions had passed.
