Following Black Friday, and Cyber Monday comes Giving Tuesday, and a group of local charities is making sure Giving Tuesday becomes just as popular as the first two.

Giving Tuesday encourages people to give back to their local charities during a time when lots of time and money is being spent on friends and family.

Pam Snowden is the Executive Director of Volunteer Central, one of the groups involved in Central AB Gives, which is a group of non-profits from across our area, who comes together at this time of year to promote Giving Tuesday.

To help spread awareness and showcase how people are giving back, Central AB Gives are encouraging people take Un-Selfies.

An Un-Selfie is when you take a photo of yourself performing an act of kindness or compassion.

Snowden says social media has helped spread their message quickly.

“It created a lot of awareness, and it’s a pretty new movement in Central Alberta, but the more that we get together and do events like this, and talk about Giving Tuesday and make a social media campaign with a really broad reach, the more people are aware of the movement of Giving Tuesday.”

Red Deer Mayor Tara Veer officially declared November 28th as Giving Tuesday in a ceremony earlier this month at the Family Services of Central Alberta office.

To participate, you can use the hashtags #CentralABGives and #unselfie.
