The Town of Sylvan Lake has formalized plans to collaborate with Fogdog Energy Solutions Inc. in order to bring a No Landfill Disposal Facility to the community.

Signed agreements effectively approve construction and subsequent operation of the facility, based on conditions, and are required in order for Fogdog Energy Solutions Inc. to move ahead with their application to Alberta Environment and Parks for approval to proceed with the facility.

The agreements have been reviewed and negotiated by both parties, including legal consultants, and the Town of Sylvan Lake is confident that the community stands only to benefit from this innovative means of collecting, converting, and reusing waste.

“The Town of Sylvan Lake is happy to sign both a Master Services Agreement and Facility Ground Lease with Fogdog Energy Solutions Inc. This is a major step forward and helps establish the Town of Sylvan Lake as a leader in creative waste management and innovation. A No Landfill Disposal Facility aligns perfectly with Council’s Strategic Plan, and our mission to deliver fiscally responsible and environmental stewardship through demonstrated leadership, while continuing to provide quality infrastructure and services to our residents.” – Mayor Sean McIntyre, Town of Sylvan Lake.

It’s great to see Municipalities converting these legacy landfill processes, and turning them into revenue positive and cost-savings solutions.

Economic Development Officer for Sylvan Lake Vicki Kurz says there will be immediate savings for residents, as well as the long-term benefits of reducing waste.

“We’ve estimated approximately $200,000 a year in savings… just the cost associated with trucking, labour, those sort of things. And of course, people will be recycling everything.”

Kurz goes on to say they are planning on building the facility on the land that currently has their waste transfer site.

“We’ll run parallel because there are still things like electronics and things that you can’t put through that type of facility, and those are gathered up and shipped elsewhere, but they will be using our weigh station, and then they will connect to our whole system.”

“Waste is a resource; we have a short time to turn climate change around. Decisions like this gets Canada one step closer to true climate change.” – Marlon Lee, Fogdog Energy Solutions Inc.

The next step is to work with Alberta Environment and Parks for approval. Following that, both the Town and Fogdog are optimistic a future facility could be up and running within 24months.

Sylvan Lake residents can expect more information about a No Landfill Disposal Facility and what that means for our community, early in the new year.
