Two new playgrounds are on the way to a pair of Blackfalds Schools.

One playground for kids ages 5-8 and another for kids’ ages 9-12 will be built this year for the Iron Ridge Intermediate Campus and soon opening St. Gregory the Great Catholic School.

Mayor Melodie Stol says what was unique about this project, was that students of both schools were included in the decision process.

"I'm just so happy that the rec. board took that extra step to really work with the students of the schools. So they could pick the playground that they wanted. Our parents in this community have rallied together to help fundraise and make sure this project could happen. But making sure the kids had a say, that's a lot of fun."

The town, parents and school division worked together to raise $225,000, which will build the two new playgrounds shown above.

Stol says the students were very excited to have a say in the Cottonwood Playground Project.

"The kids really thought about their school and the other students in their school when they made their choice. So some of the pieces are wheelchair accessible. They wanted to make sure there was a saucer swing so any kids with mobility issues would also be able to have fun. Making sure there was ground entry for kids who needed help getting onto the equipment."

There were 9 different designs presented to staff, students, and parents, but it was B-D-I Play Designs that was a unanimous choice.
