The Red Deer RCMP are warning the public of an email fraud circulating through Central Alberta.

The fraudsters appear to impersonate business colleagues for financial benefit. So far, two organizations have reported to RCMP that multiple individuals have received a fraudulent email. Email recipients are expected to purchase a large quantity of gift cards as a favor to the impersonated individual sending the email.

RCMP recommend the following tips in avoiding fraud:

  • Ensure the correct email address is being used and call the individual directly to confirm their identity
  • Prepaid gift cards and credit cards are often used for fraudulent activity. Be wary of any request to procure or to provide payment in this format.
  • Be careful when providing any personal information by phone, email, or text.
  • If something feels off, trust your gut.
  • Do not be intimidated by high-pressure tactics.

The Red Deer RCMP is asking the public to report on all fraud attempts, whether they are successful or not. Information on these types of activities can help prevent others from being targeted and potentially apprehend a suspect.
