RCMP and Peace Officers wants to make sure you're being safe and sober while you drive, and Officers in Penhold are putting together a display in their town to draw more attention to the dangers of impaired driving.

Donated by a local towing company, the smashed up vehicle will be along the roadside complete with signage, to demonstrate the consequences of driving impaired, whether that's under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, or other legal or illegal drugs.

Penhold Peace Officer Jay Klause says even though this display is just for this long weekend for now, it's always a good time to talk about the dangers of impaired driving.

“I think we’re going to do this as an annual reminder. Everybody has been told about impaired driving for as long as I can remember, even before I was driving. It still seems that it’s one of the things that hit hardest. We’ve made it so that we can do it over and over.”

Klause said he got the idea from a friend at Transport Canada.

The car will be set up around noon today at the corner of Highway 2A and Lucina Street starting around noon on Friday and will be displayed until Tuesday.

This community lead initiative was piloted with the MADD Parkland Chapter which covers Spruce Grove, Stony Plain and Parkland County in May of 2020.
