Jason Kenney is the new leader of Alberta's PC Party, after beating out Richard Starke and Byron Nelson with 75% of the vote on the first ballot in delegate voting on Saturday.

The former Calgary MP and federal Conservative Cabinet Minister will now start the next phase of his unite-the-right campaign by seeking a deal with the Wildrose Party to join forces under a new Conservative banner.

We hit the streets of Lacombe to hear how locals are feeling about the new leader and his plans:

“we have no choice, if not we’ll have an NDP government again and we do not need that”

“I don’t like him because he’s from Ottawa, he’s been too far away, I think he should be home grown”

I can’t see NDP winning again, I really can’t, not with everything that’s going on”

I don’t think Wildrose can do it by themselves and I don’t think the PC’s can do it by themselves. I was kind of a PC person and they lost my confidence and I voted with Wildrose because they were kind of standing for more of what I supported, but they have to get over their pride and unite the right”

Many in Lacombe seem to have had enough of the NDP.

“I think it’s a good deal, I think Wildrose and PC better pull together or there won’t be any Alberta left after 3 years again”

“I think it’s the most positive way to get rid of the NDP right now because PC’s aren’t ready, so that’s the option”

“I’m 100% behind him and behind unity for Alberta, seeing it really as the only way to beat the NDP in the next go around”

“I think the NDP is going to be out anyways no matter what, I think there is enough people fed up with them”

“The reason I want them to unite the right is because they would have to start a new party, and I think starting a new party would be a fresh start as opposed to continuing with Wildrose or those bad names”

Kenney will meet with Wildrose leader Brian Jean today in Edmonton.
