He’s a crime prevention agent working in the Wolf Creek school system, building positive relationships with students and instilling good advice.

Cst. Jeff Hewitt is a School Resource Officer with Lacombe Police and he explains some of the crime prevention work he does.

“It varies from day to day. We do a lot of prevention so we’ll do education. We just wrapped up the Safe in Six Program. It teaches drug and alcohol awareness in Grade 6 but it also touches on healthy relationships, online safety and bullying,” Hewitt says.

The job requires him to build a rapport with students, whether that’s joining in for a gym class or mingling over lunch.

There can be mentoring involved. Hewitt says his favourite part of the job is the ability to steer at-risk youth away from poor life choices.

“If you had a kid who’s maybe hanging around the wrong type of crowd, you can spend a bit of time with him, do a little bit of work and you can get him going with the proper crowd so he’s not going towards the wrong lifestyle,” he says.

Hewitt is also involved with the Special Olympics.

Lacombe Police recently received a new 2017 Ford Explorer thanks to Lacombe Ford, which donated the vehicle to the School Resource Program.

The new vehicle features new decals that clearly indicate who's driving. Hewitt says he's seeing a lot more waving kids as a result.
