It was a little frightening, to say the least, for the few people at Westerner Days who received minor injuries due to mechanical failure on one of the rides.

A little before 9 p.m. Friday night, one of the carts on the Tilt-A-Whirl ride lost control and started bumping into the other carts before tipping backwards.

17-year-old Stephanie Sutton, who was in the cart, along with her two her friends, describes the injuries.

“One of my friends had a bruise on her head so she had a little bump. My other friend got a little bit of a bruise on her face from rolling over and I got some pain in my head and neck.”

CEO of Westerner Park, Ben Antifaiff, says the ride was dissembled Saturday morning and all the components were visually inspected.

He ensures the ride will be repaired and inspected by the Alberta Elevating Devices Amusement Rides Safety Association.

“All of us at Westerner Park, including our partners that operate Midway for us, believe safety is the upmost importance and we’ll be a 100 per cent certain the ride is safe prior to in being put back in service."

Fortunately, nobody was seriously injured, but Sutton says she is still feeling shook up over the incident and is having second thoughts of returning to Westerner Days.

“It was like my worst nightmare coming true. I’m a little scared to go back because you shouldn’t be scared to go on a ride, you should trust that it’s safe.”

Antifaiff describes the incident as “unfortunate” and says they will continue to provide a safe environment for those who attend Westerner Days.

Sutton says she was refunded $42, but is asking herself if her safety is worth more than that?
