The rescheduled Lacombe Terry Fox Run went ahead at Cranna Lake on Sunday, a week after being postponed due to the weather.

While a number of people had actually completed the run on their own the previous week, about 10 came to participate.

Ainge Roy was one of them, running for his mother Tara and late grandmother, Lois.

“We’ve been coming out here for quite a while. Just this year, my mom fought and beat cancer so that just makes it extra special and important to come out here to support this cause,” said Roy.

The Terry Fox Run in Lacombe has been an annual tradition for Ainge Roy, who ran for his mother Tara and late grandmother, Lois.

Another runner, Katie Petrella, was participating in her second run in Lacombe.

Her 86-year-old grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time and is nearing the end of radiation treatment.

Petrella’s originally from Ontario and is completing an undergraduate degree at the University of Waterloo. She works as a research assistant at the Lacombe Research Centre.

As someone versed in science, she’s hopeful that a cure for cancer may be found one day. She’s also keen to join the search herself.

“I’m really interested in research for cancer cells. Being in this field inspires me to pursue the medical field further,” Patrella said.

“Being from the Toronto area, we do have the Sunnybrook cancer centre there. That makes me feel like I can work there one day and help people.”

Fundraising totals from the run won’t be known for a while but at least $1,300 has been raised for cancer research.
