Premier Jason Kenney began the April 28th COVID-19 update by acknowledging the flood evacuations occurring in Fort McMurray. Kenney noted that hope is in sight for evacuees as the flooding situation is improving with warm weather as ice jams melt.

Kenney announced the province is working on a relaunch strategy that will take a number of statistics into account.

“Health measures we will be watching will be the following: the number of hospitalizations, the number of intensive care admissions, the rate of growth of COVID-19 cases, including confirmed cases, a percentage of testing, and others,” said Kenney.

The Premier unveiled updated modeling case projections. The probable scenario estimates 596 people requiring hospitalization when the virus reaches its’ peak. The new elevated scenario estimated 745 people will require hospitalization from the virus when it reaches its’ peak. Both models; however, are still projecting at higher than what the province’s current situation suggests.

“We’re not yet at the point of returning to our normal way of life, but I want to stress that Alberta’s government is working around the clock on a phased approach to relaunch our economy. We will be outlining that relaunch strategy later this week,” said Kenney.

He urged all Albertans to listen to the advice of public health officials as we take the steps for a relaunch soon.

“There is light ahead. In fact, the data and modeling that I outlined here today, has lowered what had been the worst-case scenario for economic impact,” said the Premier.

Premier Kenney believes Albertans have taken the right steps to keep the spread of the virus to a minimum over the past few weeks.
