Red Deer RCMP continue to see an increase in the number of stolen identity documents they are seizing during arrests, and warn the public to take care to protect their identity, their bank and credit cards and their credit rating by not leaving wallets, purses or any personal documentation in vehicles, and by checking their mail daily. Paralleling this increase in stolen identity documents, RCMP are seeing a rise in attempted frauds by criminals sharing or re-selling those stolen identity documents among themselves.
 
June 20
At 1:30 am on June 20, RCMP responded to a report of suspicious activity and a suspicious vehicle in the Riverside Industrial area. RCMP located an abandoned truck that had been stolen out of Red Deer; the truck contained a loaded sawed off shotgun, a small amount of methamphetamine and various pieces of stolen property. Police Dog Services located a female suspect hiding in the area and took her into custody without incident.
 
RCMP have sworn the following charges against 31 year old Tia Marie Cobbe at this time and continue to investigate the various facets of this incident:
·         Criminal Code 348(1)(e) – Break and enter
·         Criminal Code 56.1 – Possession of identity documents X 2
·         Criminal Code 355(a) – Possession of stolen property over $5,000
Cobbe will appear in court in Red Deer on August 3.
 
June 20
At 3:15 on June 20, RCMP were called to a bank in response to a report of a suspect attempting to open an account and obtain credit cards with false identification. RCMP responded and arrested the suspect, who was in possession of a fake driver’s license and Social Insurance Number as well as other personal documents in someone else’s name.
 
A 35 year old man faces the following charges for fraud over $5,000 and use of a forged document. His name cannot be released at this time as those charges have not been sworn before the courts. He will appear in court in Red Deer on July 25 at 9:30 am.
 
June 23
At 11:45 pm on June 23, RCMP located a suspect in a residence who was arrestable for an incident with police the night before during which he resisted arrest and fled from police on foot. The suspect again resisted arrest when RCMP located him on June 23, but was taken into custody after a brief altercation. No one sustained anything other than minor injuries during the altercation.
 
36 year old Cory Justin McGregor faces two charges of resisting arrest (CC 129(a)) and one charge of assault to resist arrest (CC 270(1)(b)). He will appear in court in Red Deer on July 10 at 9:30 am.
 
June 22
Shortly after 4 am on June 22, Red Deer RCMP were called to a residential break and enter in progress after the residents woke and discovered a man in their home. One resident sustained minor injuries restraining the suspect until police arrived and could take him into custody. The suspect was wanted on seven outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest, and was found to be in possession of items from a break and enter at a neighbouring residence the same day.
 
21 year old Jeremy Edward Hare faces the following charges in addition to his outstanding warrants:
·         Criminal Code 348(1)(a) – Break and enter with intent
·         Criminal Code 348(1)(e) – Break and enter
·         Criminal Code 267(a) – Assault with weapon
·         Criminal Code 351(1) – Possess break-in tools
·         Criminal Code 344(b) – Theft under $5,000
Hare made his first appearance in court in Red Deer on June 23 and appears again on July 10 at 9:30 am.
 
June 22
At 1 pm on June 22, RCMP responded to a report of theft of lawn equipment while the resident was doing yard work. The suspects attempted to steal a lawn mower, trimmer and backpack blower but were interrupted by the homeowner and left behind the mower and trimmer. RCMP located the male suspect a short time later attempting to pawn the stolen backpack blower and took him into custody.
 
A 54 year old man faces one charge of theft under $5,000. His name cannot be released at this time as the charge has not been sworn before the courts; he will appear in court in Red Deer on July 18 at 9:30 am.
 
June 23
Shortly before 6 pm on June 23, RCMP responded to a report of a shoplifter at a grocery store. On arrival, RCMP determined that the suspect was also in possession of a number of stolen identity documents, including personal cheques, and was further wanted on outstanding warrants out of Red Deer and Blackfalds.
 
37 year old Cora Nichole Bush faces the following charges:
·         Criminal Code 334(b) – Theft under $5,000
·         Criminal Code 355(b) – Possession of stolen property under $5,000 X 2
·         Criminal Code 56.1 – Possession or trafficking in government documensts X 5
Bush will appear in court in Red Deer on July 19 at 9:30 am.
 
June 23 
Shortly before 5:30 pm on June 23, RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked in a parking lot, and arrested the man inside after determining that he was in breach of court-imposed conditions, in possession of crystal meth, and the truck he was in had been reported stolen out of Red Deer on June 19.
 
46 year old Darren Spencer Eccles was charged with and has been convicted of the following:
·         CDSA 4(1) – Possession of Schedule I substance
·         Criminal Code 335(1) – Take motor vehicle without consent
·         Criminal Code 145(3) – Fail to comply with conditions X 2
 
June 25
At 12:30 am on June 25, RCMP responded to a report of a robbery in progress in Riverside Meadows, after a man assaulted and attempted to rob a taxi driver. RCMP located the suspect hiding in a nearby dumpster, in possession of a small amount of cash and the victim’s cell phone. EMS attended to assess the taxi driver, who did not suffer any serious injury during the robbery.
 
28 year old Lance Mitchell Gibot faces a charge of robbery (CC 344(b)) and will appear in court in Red Deer on July 19 at 9:30 am.
 
June 25
At 9 pm on June 25, RCMP responded to a report of an erratic driver. Police located the vehicle parked at a restaurant in north Red Deer and determined that the car had been stolen out of Red Deer on June 20. Police arrested a man and a woman at the scene, while a third woman fled in the car, narrowly missing striking a police officer. RCMP subsequently located the stolen car on June 27 and continue to investigate.
 
26 year old Jesse James Leckner faces one charge of possession of stolen property under $5,000 (CC 355(b)). Leckner was remanded to appear in court in Red Deer on June 28 at 9:30 am and will appear again on July 11. 30 year old Amanda Nicole Buckingham faces one charge of possession of stolen property over $5,000 (CC 355(a)) and is scheduled to appear in court on July 25 at 8:30 am.
 
June 27
Shortly after 2 pm on June 27, RCMP responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in a parking lot in north Red Deer. RCMP arrested the female in the vehicle without incident and seized several knives that the suspect was breaching conditions by having in her possession, and a number of identification documents that did not belong to the suspect.
 
30 year old Ashley Dawn Taylor faces the following charges:
·         Criminal Code 355(a) – Possession of stolen property over $5,000
·         Criminal Code 145(3) – Fail to comply with conditions X 13
Taylor will appear in court in Red Deer on July 14 at 9:30 am.
 
June 27
At 10 pm on June 27, RCMP responded to a report of suspicious activity in the downtown; on arrival, police officers identified the suspect despite his giving a false name to police. The suspect was found to be breaching court-imposed conditions by having possession of several knives, and was further found to be in possession of methamphetamine. He was wanted on a number of outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest.
 
44 year old Scott Bradley Matwiy was charged with the following in addition to the outstanding warrants and was convicted of them in court on June 29:
·         Criminal Code 129(a) – Resist/ obstruct peace officer
·         Criminal Code 145(3) – Fail to comply with conditions
·         CDSA 4(1) – Possession of Schedule I substance (methamphetamine)
 
June 28
At 12:20 am on June 28, RCMP responded to a report of a vehicle theft after a suspect entered an unlocked garage and stole a BMW as well as keys to a second vehicle and a number of electronics. The stolen car was located at 2 am the same morning and RCMP arrested the male suspect as he hid from police in a ditch.
 
26 year old Bernard Michael Sontheim faces the following charges:
·         Criminal Code 348(1)(d) – Break and enter
·         Criminal Code 145(3) – Fail to comply with conditions X 6
Sontheim made his first appearance in court in Red Deer on June 29 and will appear again on July 7 at 9:30 am.
 
June 30
At 10 pm on June 30, RCMP on patrol in the downtown located a stolen truck being driven by a male suspect. Due to the high risk to public safety involved with stolen vehicles fleeing from police, RCMP tracked the truck at a distance until it stopped on 51A Street and the driver got out. The suspect then attempted to flee police on foot but was arrested without incident. Police seized meth and drug paraphernalia consistent with trafficking from the suspect during his arrest and determined that he was breaching a number of court-imposed conditions, including a curfew. The Ford F350 had been reported stolen out of Red Deer on June 29.
 
36 year old Robert Peter Kornelson faces the following charges:
·         Criminal Code 355(a) – Possession of stolen property over $5,000
·         CDSA 5(2) – Possession of Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking
·         Criminal Code 145(3) – Fail to comply with conditions X 2
Kornelson was remanded and appeared in court in Red Deer on July 4; he will appear in court again on July 13 at 9:30 am.
 
July 3 
The night of July 3, Red Deer RCMP located and arrested a suspect in an aggravated assault that occurred the week before in which a man had been beaten with a crowbar and suffered a number of non-life-threatening injuries. RCMP identified the suspect soon into the investigation and arrested him without incident. The victim and suspect were known to each other, and RCMP continue to investigate. The suspect was wanted on a number of warrants out of Nova Scotia at the time of his arrest.
 
27 year old David Charles Bent faces the following charges:
·         Criminal Code 267(a) – Assault with a weapon
·         Criminal Code 268 – Aggravated assault
Bent made his first appearance in court in Red Deer on July 5 at 9:30 am.
