Red Deer RCMP have located a truck they believe to be the one involved in the fatal hit and run in north Red Deer on March 11, and thank the public for the numerous tips that have come in during this stage of the ongoing investigation.

“Red Deer RCMP obtained a judicially authorized search warrant and seized a truck that we believe, at this point in the investigation, may be the suspect truck in the fatal hit and run on March 11. The RCMP forensic identification team is continuing the forensic work that will determine whether or not it is, in fact, the truck we’re looking for,” says Sergeant Kevin Halwa of the Red Deer RCMP traffic unit. “This has been a lengthy, detailed investigation requiring a lot of legwork from a number of specialized RCMP teams, and we’re grateful for the tremendous community support we’ve received. We hope to have more information on the progress of this investigation soon.”

Because work is ongoing to verify the truck’s possible involvement, RCMP are not able to comment further on any aspect of the investigation at this time. Red Deer RCMP will issue another update as soon as more information becomes available, and continue to encourage anyone who might have information about this investigation to call the Red Deer RCMP complaint line at 403-343-5575.

Red Deer RCMP have obtained surveillance images of the truck that struck and killed a pedestrian in the 5200 block of 76 Street the night of March 11, and continue to ask for public assistance to identify this distinctive vehicle.

The suspect truck is described as an older model – possibly ‘70s or ‘80s – with a red cab, amber lights on the roof, and a homemade or custom built wooden flatbed on the back that is painted black. The truck lost its passenger side mirror in the collision and sustained damage to the passenger side of the wooden flatbed.

At 8:45 pm on March 11, the truck struck a pedestrian who was standing near a parked vehicle and fled the scene; sadly, the victim was pronounced deceased at hospital a short time later. RCMP continue to conduct numerous interviews in their work to identify the suspect and continue to search for trucks that match this description.

“The photos we’ve obtained aren’t great quality, but they do show how distinctive this truck is, and we’re hoping that sharing them will trigger someone’s recognition or memory,” says Sergeant Kevin Halwa of the Red Deer RCMP traffic unit. “This hit and run resulted in a tragic and unnecessary loss of life, and we’re asking Red Deerians to help us in our work to locate the person responsible.”
